Positioning Women in Lawrence's Selected Short Stories: "The Overtone," "The Princess," and "The Old Adam"

Abstract

"This research work studies D. H. Lawrence’s, ""The Overtone,"" ""The Princess"" and ""The Old Adam"" from the feminist perspective. It discusses male characters' domination upon female protagonists. Due to male dominated society, domination of men over women in every social, economic, cultural and religious aspects is prevalent. The patriarchy fosters the gender-based inequalities that describe men as superior and women as inferior, man as powerful and the woman as powerless. Such types of practices can be viewed in those selected stories. Basically, it examines especially female characters: Dolly, Renshaw and Mrs. Thomas who visit and revisit massive domination, agony, pain, frustration, torture from male world. While studying Lawrence's characters, researcher finds massive domination upon female. Feminist Approach really helps to depict the status of female's characters while living in patriarchal society. As in real life too, in patriarchal society, females are obliged to do indoor activities while males work outside."
